Chinese Say They're Building 'Impossible' Space Drive

Chinese researchers claim they've confirmed the theory behind an "impossible" space drive, and are proceeding to build a demonstration version. If they're right, this might transform the economics of satellites, open up new possibilities for space exploration –- and give the Chinese a decisive military advantage in space.

To say that the "Emdrive" (short for "electromagnetic drive") concept is controversial would be an understatement. According to Roger Shawyer, the British scientist who developed the concept, the drive converts electrical energy into thrust via microwaves, without violating any laws of physics. Many researchers believe otherwise. An article about the Emdrive in New Scientist magazine drew a massive volley of criticism. Scientists not only argued that Shawyer's work was blatantly impossible, and that his reasoning was flawed. They also said the article should never have been published.
Okay.. this is a weird year.. I've been trying to get scientific friends of mine to stop throwing this shit out the window before studying it in rigorous detail. Unfortunately that's a waste of time because it 'doesn't work' - one would say, whatever the hell happened to seeing is believing is obviously unnecessary for some. Especially some scientists.. what an unscientific statement

I have to say I did check if it was April the 1st. Let me assure the reader, it isn't!

I've seen a bit on this before, sounds wild! I hope they do it and it's a crying shame NASA is not even 1/100th as ambitious as this. The future of NASA seems to be all probe based. Personally I think propulsion technology is king and all we should be investing in. Once that is cracked imagine the possibilities.. such as 3 minute trip to mars! That being said, seems like they do not want us to have such tech, probably already have it and we'll never see it..

It might not happen, those who have the power, would realize that a cheap renewable, free sort of propulsion technology would mean one thing and one thing only. That nuclear reactor we call the sun, could power all our ships, just fine (think something like stargate universe, lol) - seriously - and we could mine other planets - provided nobody extra-terrestrial objects, if they did exist that is ;)

The price of gold, silver, aluminium, copper, and financial market would not only be totally damaged, but broken.

Perhaps now we know why the economy has taken a dive. They know it's coming. They know it's 'out there'.

Or perhaps i'm just dreaming a little. ;) In any case, I couldn't agree more. I don't understand how world leaders can look at a hotel ceiling instead of the stars. That means propulsion, not NASA space exploration expulsion.

    Peace,
    A

Makes me think of the "Infinite Improbability Drive" from the film The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

I think that it is about time people are putting money into this kind of R and D
Where are the flying cars already? It's 2010 and I still put a nasty liquid into my truck in a messy way so it can beet my teeth out on the crappy roads as I navigate in a not so straight line to get to work or the market.
Introducing this kind of technology as a new drive instead of the free energy approach might just be the way to get it out there, In future attempts anyway, before it is noticed. Then "They" don't have a choice but to except it and rethink their plan of sucking money out of our pockets.

" Ere many generations pass, our machinery will be driven by a power obtainable at any point of the universe. This idea is not novel. Men have been led to it long ago by instinct or reason; it has been expressed in many ways, and in many places, in the history of old and new. We find it in the delightful myth of Antheus, who derives power from the earth; we find it among the subtle speculations of one of your splendid mathematicians and in many hints and statements of thinkers of the present time. Throughout space there is energy. Is this energy static or kinetic! If static, our hopesare in vain; if kinetic - and this we know it is, for certain - then it is a mere question of time when men will succeed in attaching their machinery to the very wheelwork of Nature."
