The Herald Sun reports chief commissioner Simon Overland today said discrepancies between technological advances and their mathematical interpretation had meant the system needed to be reviewed.
The decision meant forensic officers would not submit DNA evidence or statements before the courts took their Christmas break.
He said he hoped the system would be up and running again by the time they re-opened in mid-January.
Mr Overland said that about six County Court cases were in question.

The problem has existed since September and Mr Overland said he had become aware of it in the last 10 days.
He said he retained faith in DNA and said it was not the science itself and its interpretation by mathematical models which was the issue.
"The science is absolutely rock solid; this is a mathematical issue," he said.
"The science has outstripped the mathematical model."
