The biggest hoax/scientific blunder in history?

President Obama is gravely concerned; Gordon Brown and David Cameron are agreed that something must be done; the EU is united in the view that urgent action is needed. The problems of climate change and the threat of global warming have, over the past two decades, taken a unique role on the world stage.

Even the threat of nuclear annihilation never seemed to be taken as seriously as this. Yet as the world gears up for next month's Copenhagen conference on climate change, it is time to ask a few questions.

Is the world really getting hotter? If it is, to what extent is it caused by our burning of fossil fuels? Are polar bears facing extinction because of man's selfishness? Or has the entire world gone stark staring mad?

In his new book, The Real Global Warming Disaster, Christopher Booker tells the remarkable tale of the inexorable rise of global warming to the top of the international agenda. With the pace and intrigue of an espionage thriller, he analyses the political and scientific shenanigans that have led the world down a path which he claims is hurtling towards a disaster far greater than the one it is designed to prevent.

So who is right? Is global warming a firmly established scientific fact, denied only by an ever-decreasing bunch of loony sceptics such as Booker, or is it, as Booker maintains, creating the most costly scientific blunder in history?

The story of the obsession of the age began in the eighties when the UN set up its Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In the cold mid-seventies there had been a great scare that the world was heading for a new ice age. But now the weather had improved and warming had become the great threat.

The first report of the IPCC, published in 1990, began with all the caution one expects in a scientific paper but rapidly turned into something closer to a disaster movie script with a scenario of floods, drought, and diseases that might happen around the world if global warming continued unchecked.

Note that word "might". Scientist knew that carbon dioxide had a warming effect; they knew that human activity was increasing its levels but the precise effect was impossible to know. The disaster script was the worst-case scenario but the media and politicians lapped it up.

But who were the IPCC anyway? Supposedly they were 1,500 top climate scientists, soberly weighing up the evidence for and against human-induced climate change. "In fact," Booker says, "the IPCC was never intended to be anything of the kind. The vast majority of contributors have never been climate scientists. Many are not scientists at all. And from the start the purpose of the IPCC was not to test the theory but to provide the most plausible case for promoting it."

They had every reason to do so. The more disasters they predicted, the more politicians panicked and the more they justified their own role. In a few years, global warming had grown from an untested theory into a secular religion.

By the time of the Kyoto conference in 1997, the global warming movement had engendered something indistinguishable from religious fervour in its supporters. carbon was the great sin for which forgiveness could only be obtained by paying money for carbon credits. Quite how that was meant to reduce emissions was anybody's guess but carbon trading has become very big business, adding yet more carriages to the global warming bandwagon.

The world's politicians fell over one another to promise answers to the problem and make greater promises to establish their green credentials. "The true believers in global warming," writes Booker, "exhibited a moralistic fanaticism, justified by the transcendent importance of their cause." Any who dared question them were denounced as heretics.

But what of the proposed solutions? Wind farms, as booker makes very clear, are extremely expensive and inefficient. Because they work only when the wind is blowing, wind farms need the back-up of coal-fired power stations, which actually increases CO2 emissions. Perhaps if the entire country was covered with wind farms they could supply all our energy needs - but at what cost?

Then there are biofuels. According to Booker, making fuel out of crops uses more energy than it creates. In any case, if Britain is to deliver its promised targets on biofuel production, it would need to give up 70% of its agricultural land to growing them. Save the planet - give up food.

"The world's politicians," Booker tells u, "led by Britain, the EU, and now President Obama, are poised to impose on us far and away the most costly set of measures that any group of politicians has ever proposed in the history of the world - measures so destructive that even if only half of them were implemented, they would take us back to the Dark Ages."

In 2007, Al Gore was awarded an Oscar and the Nobel Peace Prize for his contributions to the global warming debate, yet as Booker and many others have pointed out, his award winning documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, is packed with very dubious science. His graphs linking CO2 and temperature are based on discredited scientific papers. Even his emotionally charged pictures of drowned Polar Bears are out of context. Those shown simply died in a storm. In fact polar bear numbers are higher now than they have been for years.

And is it still really getting warmer? Much of the present activity was triggered when 1998 was identified as the hottest year ever, but it has actually been getting colder since then. Last year, our politicians were even debating the Climate Change Bill during the worst October snowfall London had seen for years.Yet despite the chill in the air only two MPs questioned whether the measures in the bill were truly necessary. Sea levels, despite predictions, have not risen in the past decade, and while atmospheric CO2 has continued to increase, temperatures have actually fallen.

Professor Richard Lindzen who, unlike many in the IPCC, is a leading atmospheric scientist, writes: "Future generations will wonder in bemused amazement that the early 21st century's developed world went into a hysterical panic over a globally averaged temperature increase of a few tenths of a degree and... proceeded to contemplate a rollback to the industrial age.

Gordon Brown very recently said, we have "less than fifty days" to save the planet. But perhaps it is the politicians the planet needs saving from, not the threat of global warming.
I'll be buying the book to judge for myself, rather than adopting the law of the greens which is:

    Ignore the science,
    attack the man,
    repeat the mantra.

Yes it seems the method of bashing each others theory doesn't always work, maybe that is because the best chess player can be friends with the opponents pieces, but not others, leaving what is to be hammered subject to that of demo than that of liberty.

There can be no freedom of thought for as long as we condone the playing out of intellectual games,

Indeed, it is not who hammers hardest or least, or is protected by the marvel of ones theory - but he who knows when to hammer and when not will arise a victor, the politician is guaranteed success, in science and in community - for it is these people whom know how to win, whereas winning cannot enter the head of a man who's sole foundry is that of truth and responsibility and genius.

Equally meaning that, geniuses have no concern for politics, and there is no community of people without it - it is no wonder that the genius is not only isolated, but ridiculed as well.

And even less wonder why some of their work never reaches, or is delayed considerably, in reaching the world

I agree.. there are many sad hoaxes, on both sides. Politics and Science.. some are genuine, and some are yet to be found that the 'hoax is a hoax'

I know that's not 'science' - but it is sanity. If not, at least philosophy. ;]

Well, my own view is that man-made global warming or climate change, call it what you will, is a manufactured panic, created by politicians as a new fund raising device and control method. They have taken advantage of the Earth's natural warming and cooling cycle to do this. While the climate was warming it was 'stop global warming! Pay more for everything to save the planet!' Now the Earth is cooling again, has been since 1998 and will continue to do so for at least twenty years it is 'Stop climate change! Pay more for everything to save the Earth!' And at the back of it all is the one world government. It is happening in Europe, soon there will only be three trading blocs, Europe, the Americas, and the East.
The first politician to take global warming to the international political stage was Margaret Thatcher. She used it to give herself credibility in the eyes of the world's politicians. She was able to baffle them with bullshit as she had a degree in chemistry, she used this fact to give credence to her claims. Of course, not wanting to appear ignorant and inferior to Britain's female leader, foreign politicos went along with it.
This resulted in the creation of the IPCC, and the current situation where climate change is almost a fanatical religion, our children are indoctrinated with it in school, and sceptics are denounced as 'deniers'. That last one I find particularly repugnant, as it is an attempt to stifle debate by likening sceptics to Holocaust deniers, that is an insult to survivors and victims of the nazi genocide, and an insult to thinking people everywhere.

If you don't believe it is all about money, ask billionaire Al Gore.

    It is in my experience , that the NWO that some people refer to as the 'illuminati', work something like this;

    1. Your group is presented with Problem A
    2. Your group create a totally unrelated Problem B to 'fits' into your initial problem (much like businesses sit reading T&C, choosing the 'best footings' to stand on legally
    3. When people can no longer bare the pain of Problem B, you present pre-prepared, pre-computed Solution to Problem B, just that, it also fixes Problem A.

    4. Nobody is any wiser what so ever.

It's called divide and conquer. Just deployed with a more technologically and media driven sophistication.

'Explain it in a way that you know he will understand, and he will immediately believe'

This is how these people work and think. It's true genius, and I agree with their philosophy ; people do not 'deserve' wisdom if they are too ignorant to care for it. That of course still does not make it right, does it?

IPCC scientist uses security to silence journalist asking awkward questions:

Big Government Blog Archive UN Security Stops Journalist’s Questions About ClimateGate

"A Stanford Professor has used United Nation security officers to silence a journalist asking him “inconvenient questions” during a press briefing at the climate change conference in Copenhagen.
Professor Stephen Schneider’s assistant requested armed UN security officers who held film maker Phelim McAleer, ordered him to stop filming and prevented further questioning after the press conference where the Stanford academic was launching a book."

Here is video of the incident:

Very interesting article in yesterday's Express:

Express.co.uk - Home of the Daily and Sunday Express | Express Yourself :: Global Warming: What a climate con!

"GLACIERS that don’t melt, polar bears that aren’t dying, temperatures that haven’t increased – why global warming is nonsense
This newspaper has been vociferous in challenging the wisdom of the powerful climate-change lobby which insists humans have put the planet in peril. Yet it seems every week another “green” warning is repudiated by a scientific community reassessing how much danger we are really in. A few days ago, for instance, a new book was released that exposes one of the bedrocks of global warming – the so-called hockey stick graph – to be fatally flawed. it’s a
confusing debate so here, with the help of investigative journalist Christopher Booker, we debunk the most commonly held myths.

Climate e-mails row university 'breached data laws'

Climate e-mails row university 'breached data laws'

Retired engineer David Holland launched the Freedom of Information request

A university unit involved in a row over stolen e-mails on climate research breached rules by withholding data, the Information Commissioner's Office says.

Officials said messages hacked in November showed that requests under the Freedom of Information Act were "not dealt with as they should have been".

But too much time has passed for action against the University of East Anglia.

The UEA says part of a probe into the case will consider the way requests by climate change sceptics were handled.

this one shouldn't be missed ;)

Science chief John Beddington calls for honesty on climate change - Times Online

"The impact of global warming has been exaggerated by some scientists and there is an urgent need for more honest disclosure of the uncertainty of predictions about the rate of climate change, according to the Government’s chief scientific adviser."
