I'm an Atheist...

... I do not believe in a 'god' or 'gods'. I see them all as human constructs, created to explain the unknown at whatever time of human history they were worshipped.

That said, I believe in a.. I don't have words to describe it, 'cosmic consciousness' would be too cliche, but something along those lines. I believe matter can neither be created nor destroyed, only transformed, ie, wood can be burned and transformed into smoke, ash, and charcoal. The wood molecules still exist, but they have been transformed into a new form. Therfore, I believe we are all 'star stuff', the Earth was born out of the formation of the solar system, which was born out of earlier cosmic happenings... and everything on Earth is a chemical reaction of some kind... so I am made up of molecules that have always existed but have been transformed in billions of different ways since the beginning of time... hence made of 'star stuff'. Damn its hard to explain this stuff when you've been on the whisky all evening!

So, my question is, am I really an Atheist?

heh, what about collective unconsciousness? I have written an article about this in the media-> articles section if you are interested ;-) Culture difference , or cultures (are an embodiment of collective unconsciousness), or a heritage of knowledge and values that exist throughout a land, or amongst a particular group, its a fascinating psychological sociology to look into.

Makes you wonder what reality really is, especially if you watch something like "what the bleep do we know"

It's hard not to remain suitably tied to the agnostic chair of 'oh my god this is way over me' sort of attitude,
Scientists seem to seek to be God, not to find one in my opinion, myself? Well Agnostic is my polite way of saying i don't think a fallacious self referenced idea can be disproved, but qed certainly makes a compelling case for an empowered, faithful intention-al mind, something like that anyway.. hehe

Haha, yeah I can be a little bit abstract at times, I hope you don't find it as off-putting as I do *chuckle*. I have to say though for an atheist you have mighty good taste in avatars!

I myself am an Atheist -former agnostic-, I felt agnostics were not any form of cohesive group that could make a difference in the battle of 'freedom from religion' which we seem to be losing. So I side more with the Atheists now and trying to help steer humanity towards rational thought. If people want to have religious belief fine by me, just keep it out of my life and we'll get along fine.

I think the universe could be alive.. Here is a comparison of a brain cell to the universe.. amazing similarity..

hey dude have you ever thought that Agnostics don't need or require freedom from religion?

Really amazing pictures by the way, sometimes it actually surprises me as an Agnostic more Scientists who see such things can't help wonder in a creator. (The Big - Bang was instantaneous yet prolonged) some miracle.

Sometimes I wonder if the universe to human beings is what space is to your pet, an absurdity hard to imagine or even conceive, but as our intellectual knowledge spans outwards (becomes greater) it seems that things get comparatively smaller. Sounds a bit like the big bang, maybe consciousness has something to do with it.

Getting back to Smith, yes your an Athiest.

And I know what you mean about the universe. I find it both awe inspiring and terrifying at the same time. I can understand why some people need a nice big father figure looking after it to keep them sane. I find the fact it doesnt need one even more impressive though. Most Athiests tend to feel the same on it. I'm not sure there is a word for it however, I do know it is what Einstein was refering to with his god quotes (he was an Athiest and clarified it after the fundies got hold of it ).

Therefore you could have a
Gnostic Athiest : There is no God and I know that for a fact
Agnostic Athiest: We cannot truely know there is not a god for sure, but I'm working on the assumption there is not.
Gnostic Thiest : I know God exists! (generally followed by burning 'non-beleivers' if possible)
Agnostic Thiest : I think God is there but we can never truely know in this lifetime.

Personally I consider myself an Agnostic Athiest, though the term tends to confuse a lot of people which is why the agnostic bit is generally dropped.
